[He's also a California boy, so that hasn't helped matters. Although, yes, he did think to wrap himself in a blanket/toga for a bit. Although he's not necessarily going to brag about that fact.]
Yeah, I picked up on that when they stole the third shirt as I was putting it on.
[He should have given up after shirt #3, but it wasn't really until he'd lost the fifth shirt that he'd said "Screw It" and gave up on that endeavor.] See you soon then.
[Jason looks around and decides that since he's waiting he can help some of the items get sorted. Maybe that will make it easier to find things since some items were sort of tossed together at random. Plus it makes him feel useful and that's been difficult to maintain lately. He doesn't make much of a dent before he hears his voice called. He turns to the entrance and makes his way over to Matt, careful not to step on any items or kick anything over.]
( Matt has the compassion not to laugh at Jason's misfortune. still, the idea of snatching three shirts in a row is unduly comical, that's not on him. he hadn't bothered to find a secondary pair of sunglasses after losing the first — perhaps it would have been a waste of time, anyway.
he lingers at the doorway instead of trying to pick his way over the impromptu lost and found. not that he can't, even when he's milking the blind thing. he just figures he doesn't have to, and since Jason moves to join him, it seems he's right.
that was fast? hmm. curious! ) I was closer than I thought, ( Matt says, an easy and thoughtless lie. there's no good indication he's lying, he doesn't seem breathless or rushed. who knows where he'd been when the message arrived! nobody can say, probably not even Matt himself, bc blind!!! he manages a half smile, joking, ) Maybe I'm more aerodynamic without my sunglasses.
[And Jason would probably fly faster without the drag from his clothes, but he wasn't about to try flying naked because there were all kinds of things wrong with THAT picture. Once he's within arm's reach of Matt he taps the aforementioned glasses against the back of his hand.]
Here, they're in one piece at least.
[Though, as he says it, he's not sure how much that actually means to Matt. On the one hand it wouldn't really matter, right? But, on the other, this was an accessory that was clearly important enough to Matt to rush to the church and get back as soon as possible. They were important, so being broken would have been bad.]
( it's not as if they do him any good, there's no lingering sight that he needs to protect, and even if there was? there's no sunlight here to damage his eyes further. they don't help what limited eyesight he has work better. they're entirely aesthetic, and entirely a disguise. Matt knows his eyes are a dead giveaway to his blindness, and despite the fact he's never exactly subtle about it, he's always been insecure about the vacant stare he can't really avoid.
he takes them carefully, running a touch over the arms and the brim, just to make sure they're his. not quite the mirrored number he wore back home, though he's grown attached to these ones all the same. that said, he doesn't press them back on his face immediately; he looks at and past Jason all at once before giving him a small smile.
Matt smiles a lot. somehow that doesn't detract from the natural pull of one that's a bit more genuine. )
Thank you. I don't need them, but I'd rather have them anyway. ( he doesn't clarify on why, though he might if Jason asked. ) Have you found anything else someone might be missing? Anything interesting?
[Jason can't help but watch Matt's hands as they trace the edges and lines of the glasses. He guesses that they could be the wrong pair, but a moment later Matt does seem reassured that these are, in fact, his glasses. Jason's relieved and happy that he could help out another friend around Beacon after all the chaos of the 'tricks' from the spirits.]
No problem. [He figures it must be a comfort thing and Jason doesn't feel like it's really his place to ask.] There's still a few piles around. I found a mask that I think belongs to Eleven under one of my shirts. I was probably going to take it back to her at some point, I don't think she makes it to the church as frequently as you or I do.
[It wasn't that Jason was religious and he had sort of given up on trying to contact the gods. However, it was the closest thing he had to a temple around here -- at least until Aziraphale and he got back on that project -- and it was just another sort of reminder of home. Less so than the Bonfire, but he still liked to come here from time to time to think or do his version of praying which was only a prayer in the sense that he was trying to get ANY of the Greek OR Roman gods to listen.
So far no dice. But he came all the same and in doing so would see Matt from time to time.]
( it's true, he's a pretty regular visitor of the old and dark church. even now that it's more or less in working order again. Matt makes a habit of praying in the morning, it's a good way for him to center himself. and he knows he's not the only one, though he has yet to really pry into what anyone does there. he probably won't — doesn't seem his place. Matt is willing to listen to prayers whispered in hushed earnest but apparently he's not willing to pry.
Matt stands a little straighter with his sunglasses back on. it clearly is a comfort thing — he feels a little more confident with his blank eyes covered. )
I didn't know she had a mask, ( he muses with a slightly puzzled expression. that's not even a pretend not to know something i shouldn't sort of didn't know, he really had no clue. ) I'm sure she'll be happy to have it back. It seems there wasn't much limit to what the spirits would run off with.
[Jason notices the change in Matt's stance almost immediately. He was trained to study fighting and evaluating his opponent, and body language like that is hard to ignore. It does confirm his suspicion about it being a sort of comfort. It's how Jason had felt once he'd found a sword around here, although it wasn't quite the same as the weapon he'd left in the world of the living, but still. A weapon was something he had nearly always had at hand.]
I think she got it for Halloween. I saw her and Aziraphale trick or treating and she had on a similar costume then.
You could come with if you like...unless you were going to hang around here at the church.
( Matt is stone cold serious, most of the time. still, he likes Eleven. it's nice to hear of a child getting a chance to simply... be a child. it makes him smile. )
Cute. ( he doesn't have an ounce of sarcasm in that comment — he 100% means that. even the part about Aziraphale being there. he's a little tiffed at the angel for lacking the capacity to tell his idiot friend no, but he still has a good heart. he just needs some more sense to go along with it.

as for helping return the mask, why not? )
Sure. I'm happy to, if you want to lead the way.
